An Authentic 1866 Union-Issued Springfield: America’s Bridge from War to West
Issued to the U.S. Army just after the Civil War, the Springfield Model 1866 Trapdoor represents America’s transition from muzzle-loading muskets to modern breech-loading rifles. Converted from wartime arms and marked with the Union seal and “U.S. Springfield,” it armed soldiers guarding frontier forts, railroads, and expanding settlements. Complete with bayonet and showing honest age, this original rifle offers a tangible link to a nation redefining itself. Well-preserved examples with clear government markings and period-correct bayonets are increasingly sought after by both military-history and Western collectors.
Famously proven at the 1867 Wagon Box Fight, this very model enabled fewer than thirty U.S. soldiers to withstand hundreds of attackers near Fort Phil Kearny. Its hinged Trapdoor breech allowed rapid reloading while prone, stunning opponents accustomed to slow muzzle-loaders and permanently reshaping frontier warfare.
